Afternoon away

Dan had Labor Day afternoon off so we took the boys to Port Huron. The boys have so much fun throwing rocks in water, and there was plenty of both! We got in some football, played at the park, walked along the channel, saw a barge go through, and had a picnic. We also learned that Thomas Edison grew up there...who knew?!

When Edison was seven his family moved to Port Huron from Ohio where he was born. He had very little formal education attending school only for a few months. He was taught how to read by his mother, then taught himself, by reading books while he sold candy on the train. Edison published the first newspaper ever to be printed on a moving train at the age of 12! His "Grand Trunk Herald" could be purchased for a penny. Edison also had the opportunity to learn how to operate a telegraph on the train. By the time he was sixteen, he worked as a telegrapher full time which gave him the chance to travel, see the country, read books, and gain life experience....
I think we all know how the story ends, but it's pretty cool to learn how the story starts every now and then.
