Gloria M. Becksvoort
February 16, 1918 ~ June 28, 2009
My Grandma Gloria Becksvoort, lost her first husband, Harvey Schipper, to cancer in 1961. She then started raising 3 children on her own, Dell, Norma, and Carol. Meanwhile, my Grandpa, John Becksvoort lost his first wife, Henrietta, to cancer in 1964. He started raising his 3 kids, Roger, Wayne(my dad), and Shirley, on his own. John met Gloria and our family was 'born'. Grandpa and Grandma were married on April 8, 1966, bringing their two families together, a true 'Brady Bunch' kind of story.
They lived on a farm in Holland on 60th St. where they spent most of their life together. After my Grandpa's health took a turn, they moved into Oak Crest Manor, where they both spent their days until their rooms were ready in Heaven.
I have many memories of being at the farm, watching my Grandpa at work in his coop, riding the old trike, helping Grandma in the kitchen, ringing the bell for Grandma to tell Grandpa it's time for lunch, picking blueberries with a coffee can tied around my waist and eating more than I picked, playing in the corn crib, taking walks around the pond, playing pool with cousins in the basement, making a mess of puzzles(which Grandma did not like), sorting through tons(literally) of fabric so Grandma could make rugs, helping Grandma with crossword puzzles, I could go on and on. The memories are forever, also the life lessons Grandma taught, like, don't ever hold in your pee, or your bladder will burst. I don't know if this was just a lesson for my sisters and I, but I still remember her saying it and to this day I go when I gotta go!
Because of Grandpa and Grandma, 17 of us grew up 'together'. Except for a few cousins, we are almost all married with children. We all share memories of time spent with Grandpa and Grandma, each with the underlining love and Christian example they showed. And now we get the chance to share the memories with our children, and pass on the family values instilled in us by our parents and grandparents. Thanks for the memories Grandpa and Grandma, until we meet again...
